Smart technology in your homes is supposed to make lives easier, but could it actually be a tool used by the CIA to spy on you? What is it in fact? Smart homes often use motion sensors and webcams to recognize when a resident is home so that lights are automatically turned on and off, security can be increased, etc. These types of gadgets sound cool, but what happens if you're a "person of interest" to the government? All of this stored information suddenly becomes an easily accessed digital footprint and a goldmine of data.
According to a recent report out by Wired magazine, CIA Director David Petraeus recently spoke out about the idea, saying this type of technology can change how the United States deals with secrecy and security. Judge Andrew Napolitano noted that the CIA is prohibited under the law from collecting information inside a person's home.
He wonders whether General Petraeus was revealing something that the CIA is already doing or planning on doing. "That's the troubling aspect of this. We don't know where the computer chips are and we don't know what the government is doing what with," he speculated.
The judge said the government needs a search warrant to come into your home, whether it's physically or virtually. However, as Shepard Smith pointed out, unless the evidence is used in court, then the government can obtain any information they want illegally.
