5) Ionization Smoke Detectors

Although they save thousands of lives every year and every household should have one, smoke detectors do carry a little risk.

Inside a smoke detector is a radioactive material called Americium-241 which ionizes the air around it and should smoke come into contact with the air it sounds the alarm.

Americium-241 emits alpha particles and low energy gamma rays.

This means they are completely safe stuck to the ceiling, however should one ever take apart a smoke detector and come into contact with the radioactive material, the danger does increase.

Nothing realistically will happen right away as the amount is so tiny but it can still manifest into cancer.

There is a lot of debate and research into the topic, some researchers say they don't pose a big threat even if touched, other researchers say one should never touch the radioactive material.

Your best bet is to stick to the safe side and never open up and take apart a smoke detector.

4) Thermometers & Some Light Bulbs

If you have an old school thermometer that isn't digital it most likely will contain mercury.

Light bulbs such as fluorescent or some energy saving light bulbs also contain mercury.

Mercury is a metal that's in liquid form at room temperature.

It is also very poisonous.

So should you break something that contains mercury and it comes spilling out you need to be very careful when cleaning it up.

Direct contact is highly advised against, but Mercury also vaporizes in the air.

This means breathing in the fumes can lead to some serious consequences.

Although only small amounts are found in thermometers and light bulbs, it can still pack a punch if handled incorrectly.

Always wear gloves, ventilate the room, and if possible wear a mask when cleaning up.

If you do inhale the fumes you can expect chest pains, shaking, twitches, difficulty breathing, and even coughing up blood.

3) Gas Powered Appliances

Gas powered appliances can be very dangerous and deadly without you even knowing.

The problem comes in the form an odorless gas called carbon monoxide.

If a gas powered appliances is defective it can release carbon monoxide which is very deadly.

The worst part is you won't even realize your breathing in the deadly gas as it has no smell.

However there are a few warning symptoms such as headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion.

If one doesn't get into fresh air soon, they will die.

Luckily carbon monoxide detectors are cheap and very effective, we highly recommend every household that uses gas in any way, has a carbon monoxide detector near a gas appliance.

2) Household Cleaners

Household cleaners contain a cocktail of dangerous chemicals.

For example most oven cleaners contain corrosive alkalis which can effect your gastrointestinal track and respiratory system if inhaled or ingested.

Furniture polishes contain chemicals that can be absorbed into your skin and cause cancer.

Toilet bowl cleaners contain such corrosive chemicals they can even cause burns on your skin and eyes.

Essentially always wear gloves when using these chemicals and keep them out of reach of children and everything will be fine.

1) Extension Cords

While an extension cord itself isn't dangerous, the way they are commonly used are.

They are the leading cause of house fires in the U.S.

Many people don't realize there is a voltage capacity and plug in as much as they can.

Plus they are usually found on the floor, under furniture and on carpets.

Some go as far as plugging in cheaply made electronics that don't adhere to safety regulations and leaving them unattended.

All this together is a huge fire hazard.

The best solution is to just be sensible with how much you plug in and never buy cheap, badly built electronics that aren't regulated.

The recent increase in e-cigarettes exploding is a perfect example, since it's a market that's blowing up some dodgy manufactures are trying to produce products as cheaply as possible just to make more profit.
